Saw this today while walking along side the Tennessee river. Must be a type of wild flower similar to ones that are solid white, just never have seen them in this purple color.

Penny these are wild flowers that I usually see in white. First time I'd seen them in this purple or lilac color. My wife and I are taking our bikes today on Mother's day back to the road and ride farther up the river than we've been before. It's a beautiful day around 80 degrees and sunny.

These flowers are called fleabanes (Erigeron) and can have white, pink, or purple rays. They are blooming up in Vermont right now too.

If you are interested in identifying some of your wildflowers, you may want to pick up a Newcomb's Wildflower Guide. I started identifying flowers two summers ago, and I've developed a deeper sense of relationship to the places I go because I'm more attentive to the details. The guide uses a system that includes leaf shape, petal number, and leaf distribution. It takes a little practice, but it's great, and well worth the time if you're interested. :)
